KEY POINTS:
A man has died after his scooter collided head on with a four wheel drive near Ngaruawahia.
The accident happened shortly after 5pm yesterday.
Waikato road policing manager Inspector Leo Tooman said initial inquiries have raised concerns about the road worthiness of the scooter.
"It appears the rear tyre has given out resulting in the 27-year-old male rider losing control and crossing into the path of an oncoming Isuzu Mu 4x4 vehicle," Mr Tooman said.
He said the crash happened in a 100km an hour zone in good weather.
Mr Tooman said people needed to take their foot off the accelerator this weekend with the Parachute Music Festival at Mystery Creek, the Tribal Pride Festival at Hopu Hopu and a large gathering at the Meremere Drag Strip this weekend.
