Lugging his bike helmet and bag around while out shopping provided inspiration for motorcycle enthusiast Joe Nelson's latest design.
The 23-year-old - who is about to complete a degree in industrial design at Massey University's Auckland School of Design - came up with "Rei", an urban electric commuter scooter with a secure compartment for a helmet and baggage built in.
The model is one of about 50 projects on display at the university's annual design exposure exhibition, open to the public at Auckland's Viaduct for three days from today.
Mr Nelson said electric scooters were not uncommon, but the large amount of storage space ergonomically integrated into his futuristic-looking design was novel.
"And it's got a folding seat that is protected from the weather and is also a theft deterrent - when the seat folds away, no one can ride it," he said. "I'd hope to see something similar around in the future."
