Many secondary schools need to do more to prepare students for life after school, the Education Review Office says.
Its report on how well schools have prepared students for future opportunities, released today, found considerable variation in the 74 secondary schools looked at.
Ten of the schools were considered to be responsive to the future plans of individual students, 38 partially responsive, 23 had limited responsiveness and three were considered poor.
ERO national manager of evaluation services Stephanie Greaney said the report's key finding was that students needed options that would suit their future plans and help making choices.
"It's not enough that courses are available to students,'' she said.
