Two year 10 girls have been expelled from Nelson's Nayland College after a vicious attack on another girl student.
It is understood that the 14-year old victim was thrown to the ground by three girls and stomped on.
She was admitted to Nelson Hospital with facial bruising and concussion, but was now back at school.
College board of trustees chairman David Moya said the incident was so serious, expulsion was the only option.
"The board followed due process and this was the only thing we could do in this circumstance," he told The Nelson Mail.
Nelson police youth aid sergeant Tracey Thompson said all three offending girls, a 13-year-old and two 14-year-olds, were being dealt with by the police youth aid section.
Ms Thompson said the students were undergoing an "alternative action plan", the outcome of which might take several weeks.
