A 14-year-old girl is in a critical but stable condition at Starship Hospital after she was hit by a car in Sandringham yesterday morning.
Police said yesterday the driver, a woman in her 20s, may have been distracted when she hit the pedestrian.
It is understood the girl was walking to school when she was hit on Taylors Rd, near the St Lukes Rd intersection, just before 8am.
At the scene of the accident yesterday, the driver of a small grey Peugeot hatchback was inconsolable, a witness said.
"She was hysterical, saying if the girl is dead she couldn't live with herself," a witness said of the woman driver, believed to be in her mid to late 20s.
