KEY POINTS:
An 11-year-old Auckland girl made up her claim that a man tried to abduct her as she walked to school , police say.
The girl said a man tried to pull her into his car as she walked to her school in Beach Haven on the North Shore last week.
She said she struggled with the man, eventually breaking free and running to school, where she raised the alarm.
After a five-day investigation the police Child Abuse Team now believed the attempted abduction never happened, Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby of the North Shore CIB said.
"Both the complainant and her parents have been cooperative with police. We are no longer seeking any person or vehicle previously referred to in this inquiry," he said.
"Police will always investigate fully all instances whereby the safety of a child has been compromised and this is a timely reminder for parents to remain ever vigilant on the activities and movements of their children," said Mr Libby.
Police are still investigating a similar complaint by a 14-year-old girl on the other side of the city at Otara on the same day.
