A Christchurch schoolboy has confessed to stealing two of the Brumbies' gear bags after they lost to the Crusaders in last weekend's Super 12 rugby final.
The bags, including Crusader Richard McCaw's playing jersey and other souvenirs from the game, have been recovered and are being returned to Brumbies' players Bill Young and George Smith.
Inspector Warren Kemp said the high school boy took the bags as a prank.
"He has confessed to the school on his own initiative and the bags are being returned to the Brumbies who are thrilled to get them back.
"The Brumbies don't want the matter taken any further. Police have spoken to the schoolboy and warned him for his actions and behaviour. The school will take other appropriate action."
Police would not say which school the student attended.
