A student who attacked a younger boy at Western Heights High School in Rotorua two weeks ago has been expelled.
Year 9 student Shane Narbey suffered a black eye and swollen nose after two Year 12 students assaulted him.
Principal Allan Rumble says one student was suspended and the school's board has since expelled him.
Another student was initially stood down but was allowed to return to school after a meeting between management and his parents.
Shane went back to school last Tuesday, five days after the assault.
The police are investigating the assault and Mr Rumble said the school was helping them with their inquiries.
There was nothing more it could do to prevent a similar attack because students were already aware of the school's lack of tolerance for fighting or bullying.
Mr Rumble said a meeting had been arranged with Shane's mother, Sharon Orr, for today.
