Eight Wairarapa players will now go forward to the Tennis Central regional finals in Wanganui on November 5. Competing in the open grade will be Ben Wilkinson, Cameron Ravenwood, Georgia Atkinson and Gabriella Cresswell while Scott Day and Brigette Mossman will contest the intermediate grade and Henry Phelps and Nicola Wall the year six grade.
Another of Wairarapa's top juniors in Sade Atkinson is now playing her club tennis in the Manawatu and she has made an immediate impact, beating the highly-regarded youngster Shaani TeMata Frost in a recent club match. That came after Frost had placed fourth in the 14 years age group-the same as Atkinson- at the national masters tournament.
Pirinoa have assumed early favouritism for the Wairarapa regional one title this season but they will face a difficult match against Gladstone at Gladstone tomorrow. Providing they are at full strength Pirinoa's greater depth should give them the edge but a Gladstone side spearheaded by the Stevensons, Baden and Emma, certainly can't be discounted.
The other regional one match this week sees Masterton at home to Martinborough with both teams looking to bounce back from defeats a fortnight ago, Masterton to Pirinoa and Martinborough to Opaki. On paper Martinborough looks the stronger of the two teams.
