The North Shore schoolboy facing a drug importing charge will not return to school and will be home-schooled instead.
Chun Lee, 17, also known as Larry Lee, reappeared in Auckland District Court charged with importing methamphetamine, otherwise known as P, on Wednesday.
Takapuna Grammar School principal Simon Lamb said today the Lee family and the school, in agreement with the Ministry of Education, had organised for Chun Lee to be taught at home.
"He will have ongoing and regular access to specialist teachers," Mr Lamb said.
All parties considered that was the best way for Lee to continue preparing his Year 13 subjects for the NCEA assessments at the end of the year, he said.
The accused teenager's bail conditions had allowed him to continue attending Takapuna Grammar and keep his job with KFC.
However, after his court appearance it was decided after phone discussions between Lee's parents and Mr Lamb that the teenager would not return to school for a week "in the best interests of student safety".
Lee was remanded on bail and will reappear in the same court on June 20.
Neither Takapuna KFC nor head office would comment on Lee's employment.
