Schoolmates have created a shrine to 10-year-old Oliver Nicholson, who died of a gunshot wound on Tuesday.
Alan Russek, principal of Dargaville Primary School, says Oliver's class were solemn following the news.
"His own classmates were very, very quiet after I told them," he told 3 News. They created a shrine to him, lighting a candle of remembrance.
"He was a fairly quiet boy, he had a good group of friends - a mixed group from his own class," says Mr Russek.
A post-mortem was performed yesterday, but police said Oliver's death was not suspicious.
His mother said: "Oliver had a hard go of it through some parts of his life but was starting to come out of his shell."
