KEY POINTS:
Penrose High School became One Tree Hill College yesterday, after the school decided it had outgrown its name.
One staff member said the area had changed and the term Penrose was considered too "industrial".
The new title mirrors the school's emblem - a depiction of Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill), unchanged since the school opened in 1955.
Board of trustees deputy chairman Graeme Hunt wrote in a school newsletter that the name no longer reflected the "values, traditions and aspirations of the wider school community".
The board selected the name from nine options. The decile 3 school has a roll of more than 700 pupils.
