A school pool care mishap landed a man in hospital yesterday after a chemical reaction caused the pool to "pop and crackle".
The man was tending Ruawai College's pool just after 11.30am when it appears he accidentally added fast-release chlorine to the pool's system, rather than slow-release.
He inhaled some fumes from the resulting reaction and was sent to hospital for observation.
It is understood the man was standing in for the school's regular caretaker. The school's students are all on summer holidays.
Meanwhile, Ruawai fire crews had rushed to the pool wearing protective chemical splash suits and breathing apparatus.
