A sailing school that aims to make it as easy as possible for newcomers to get on the water has been set up at Torbay on Auckland's North Shore.
According to its owner, Peter Head, the Elements Sailing School aims to give prospective dinghy sailors and windsurfers the opportunity to have a sailing experience, and also offers coaching and boats for hire. "We live in the City of Sails but there are few places in Auckland where people can simply roll up and go for a sail," Head says.
"Our boats are modern and well equipped, and we can either teach people how to sail or take them on an adventure sail in the Hauraki Gulf.
"This is one of the easiest ways of getting out on the water.
"We provide all the gear so there is no fuss with trailers and parking, and our costs are reasonable."
Boat hireage is $45/hour and Elements charges $60 for coaching.
The school uses five Topaz Uno sailing dinghies and a gennaker-powered Omega dinghy that Head says is ideal for family rentals and group lessons.
Head says everyone from experienced sailors to novices are welcome.
Elements operates on alternating weekends until May 1 and bookings are essential.
