A search for an armed man on the outskirts of Hamilton yesterday resulted in the arrest of another for possession of illegal drugs.
Hamilton police and the Waikato armed offenders squad members swarmed over Matangi, about 5km east of the city, after the police central communications centre received a call about a man threatening to shoot his neighbour.
After cordons were set up at 2pm, the local primary school was locked down and traffic was held up for about three hours. Inspector Mat Rogers said police had searched a number of homes around the area but could not find the man they were looking for nor any weapons.
However, police did arrest a man for the possession of illegal drugs. The man will appear in the Hamilton District Court this week.
Mr Rogers said there were no reports of shots being fired. He was not ruling out the possibility the call police received was a hoax.
