KEY POINTS:
A Hastings secondary school will not take a boy filmed attacking another boy because it refuses to clean up another school's mess.
The principal of the school, which cannot be named because of suppression orders, said its board of trustees voted unanimously on Tuesday to reject the pupil who, with his older brother, has admitted assaulting a boy in a park fight later posted on the website YouTube.
"The board took very seriously the boy's right to be educated," the principal said.
"However, the overriding concern was that we are being asked to tidy up the mess of another school."
A Ministry of Education spokesman said it was the responsibility of the school that excluded a pupil to find him a new facility. If it failed, the ministry had the power to direct an enrolment.
