A "cool" cafe promoting te reo Maori and games added a new dimension to learning at Lakeview School during Maori Language Week.
Yesterday the two Maori extension classes opened "The Cool to Korero Cafe" in the school's library, with around 60 students enjoying Milo, biscuits and te reo Maori games. One game involved a word puzzle with Maori words, another required matching illustrations in one pile of cards to their Maori description in another pile, while other students passed a ball in a circle, counting in Maori and eliminating those who stumbled.
Teacher Paul Andersen, supervising the half-hour session, said it was the second year the school had used a games/cafe theme.
