KEY POINTS:
Two top Auckland students are following in the footsteps of the country's greatest scientist.
George Gordon and Rachael Shaw are to receive a scholarship marking the 100th anniversary of Ernest Rutherford winning the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
Like the great scientist, Mr Gordon and Ms Shaw will study at Cambridge University in Britain.
Mr Gordon, 22, who has just completed a bachelor of engineering with first-class honours,
will work on a communications project set to be ultimately tested at London's Heathrow Airport.
Ms Shaw, 23, will do psychological studies of the western scrub jay.
Professor Paul Callaghan of the Rutherford Foundation said the students were fine ambassadors for New Zealand science.
