The family of the man who pushed Andy Marshall to his death approached his parents at the conclusion of a retrial.
Rugby league player Stefan Schmidt pushed New Zealander Mr Marshall to his death through a second storey window of a Perth pub in May 2011.
He was initially found guilty of murder in 2012 but in a retrial in West Australia Supreme Court in May he was found guilty of manslaughter.
Wendy and Alan Marshall of Hawkes Bay told The West Australian newspaper that Schmidt's family had approached them and offered their sympathies for the first time after the judge delivered his decision last week.
"I suppose, like an olive leaf, it was a way to reach out and express their condolences to us," Mr Marshall said.
