• ANZ has warned this week of a scam targeting its customers. A phishing email tells customers their cards have been blocked by ANZ, and to call a helpline to remove the block. If the customer calls the number, a message asks them for all their credit-card details and PIN number. ANZ warns not to click on the email's links or call the number.
• Consumer Watchdog received a scam letter this week claiming to be from the British office of a law firm representing the estate of a wealthy client with a Maori surname and no traceable heirs. The letter offered £8 million ($15m) if we replied with our address and phone number. These scams are usually attempts at identity theft and may require victims to pay a fee to receive the money. Check with the Department of Internal Affairs if you've received news of an estate bequeathed to you from a relative you know nothing about.
