Harcourts netball coach Kelly Sargent has a reputation for saying it as it is.
So when she starts hedging her bets about the chances of her team successfully defending their crown in the Wairarapa regional one series in 2011 you know it's not a case of her sitting on the fence.
Rather Sargent sees "four or five" of the premier one sides challenging hard for the title in a competition which could well be one of the most evenly contested in years.
"I'd like to think we could do it again but we're definitely no certainties," Sargent said. "There is a good spread of talent around most of the sides this year so anything could happen."
Harcourts opened their latest campaign a fortnight back with a 48-20 win over St Matthew's Collegiate and last Saturday they had a 44-17 success over Wairarapa College. In both games Sargent felt the final scoreline somewhat flattered her side with their younger opposition generally giving as good as they received. "We've had to work pretty hard, not everything has gone according to plan," she said.
The return of the athletic Katie Wyeth to the centre position after a stint overseas has been a boon to Harcourts and the inclusion of Sargent, Geraldine Carroll and Sarah Brooking give them a valuable nucleus of experience. Three ex-Wairarapa College players in Renee Cummings, Powhiri Gemmell and Victoria Green are all talented newcomers as is midcourter Sam Woodhouse.
Harcourts will confront Baywide Gladstone when the third series of premier one games is played this coming Saturday while Carterton New World Lynx take on Celtic, Makoura College plays Martinborough, Pioneer Blue will meet St Matthew's and Wairarapa College will play Trevs Sports.
