Participants in the event describe it as the "Working Girls' Competition".
Its donors conceived it as a Business Women's contest, while in fact it is a Wairarapa Women's interclub affair for those golfers who have work commitments during the week.
It is of course the Tilson Salver, a handsome trophy donated by keen Mahunga Golf Club members, Colin and the late Shirley Tilson. It was first competed for in 1985, and last Sunday saw the final round in the 2005 season, played out at Riversdale.
Going into this last round Masterton were clinging to a narrow lead, so their match against Carterton was all important. Out at the beach course it wasn't cold, but it was wet, particularly early on, so playing conditions weren't all that pleasant.
It was a fairly closely run affair, but in the end Masterton came out with a 3 ? /2 ? result, enough to give them a total of 19 points, just two points clear of runners up Riversdale on seventeen. For Masterton, Selector-Captain, Sereana Phillipps led the way with a 4/2 victory, Helen Newland won 3/2, Pam Griffith took a close contest 1 up, while Marilyn Beetham halved her match.
Masterton were delighted with their win, the first since 1998, and a result which halted Mahunga's run in the event over the past two years. So well done to the Working Girls!
Last week over a dozen 9 holers took part in a stroke competition, with the day dominated by Mary Mahoney. Mary not only finished on 53 net, three shots clear of second placed Errol Warren, but also took the nearest the pin prize at the 8th hole.
The weather last Monday was pleasantly mild, but something kept the Vets at home, because there was only a small turn out.
Results:
Women: Sylvia Howden 21 pts 1
Men: Kel Biggs 25 pts 1
Jim Picking 24 pts 2
Bill Perry 23 pts 3
Nearest the pin prize at the Fagan Ford 8th hole went to Jim Picking.
Last Saturday featured a medal round, together with a Markham's shoot-out qualifier, plus a further round in the Challenge Shield.
Results:
Group 1: Rob Harrison net 68 1
Nigel Udy net 69 2
Mike Dixon net 70 3
Group 2: Richard Wylie net 73 )
Doug Yarrall net 73 ) 1st equal
The women's results saw a minor contretemps after Sally Morch was declared the winner on net 79, after a count back with Sue Falloon. It seems that Vicky Duffy, who had a net 77, put her card in the wrong box, a mistake which wasn't discovered till after the prize giving. I'm sure they'll make it up for you Vicky, but everyone please remember to return cards to the Saturday competition box.
Nearest the pin prizes went to Shane Grant at the Alex McLeod 8th hole, and to Brent McKenzie at the Money Managers 18th.
In the Challenge Shield the best gross score of the day came from Brent McKenzie, with an excellent 70 off the stick. I spoke to Brent this week and he says it's the best round so far in the Shield, but then he just may be a little biased.
On Tuesday Masterton women played in an LGU round, plus putting, together with an Adam Philps Podiatry Shoot out qualifier.

Silver: Chris Lewis net 71 1
Jenny Sadler net 72 2
Putting: Pauline McKenzie (27)
Bronze A: Lola Ogg net 74 1
Jennie McKenzie net 77 2
Putting: Lola Ogg and Val Cobb (31 each)
Bronze B: Pam Williams 1st
Janice Hayes )
Sue Falloon ) 2nd equal
Putting: Judith Smith (34)
Nearest the pin prizes went to Deidre Walker at the Graeme Jones Car Rental 8th hole, while Lola Ogg did best at the Write Price 18th.
Next Monday 15 August, Lansdowne hosts Round 6 of the Lansdowne Trophy, with Wairarapa playing Paraparaumu.
Next Saturday 13 August, sees the annual lefties versus righties contest. I trust the cack handers can muster up a team capable posing some sort of challenge to the gentlemen of the right. I note also that Saturday features a top 10 stableford competition, where the best ten stableford scores count.
I note also that the entry sheet is up for the 36 hole TRC Toyota Wairarapa Mixed Foursomes on Sunday, 11 September.
OFF THE FAIRWAY
My recent comments on the fact there are no street names in Masterton which honour our local sporting heroes, have drawn quite a lot of response, so let's keep thinking about the need to do something about it. Incidentally, I wish to refute strongly the claim that Jones Place is named after that sporting "great", Graeme Jones.
