Salute Greytown will be playing to keep their top six playoff hopes alive when they meet Sports Arena Carterton in a Netball Wairarapa premier one netball match at the Colombo road courts tomorrow.
A loss would almost certainly see Salute Greytown still holding down seventh position on the points table with the gap between them and the sixth-placed side too great to overcome in the last two series of preliminary round matches.
Statistics indicate that Salute Greytown will go into tomorrow's game as firm underdogs. Sports Arena Carterton have won four games to their two, have the better goals for record (245 to 228) and the better goals against record (209 to 246) as well.
And it's not as if Sports Arena Carterton have nothing to play for themselves either as defeat for them would suddenly see their top six playoff position in jeopardy as well.
Two other interesting premier one matches will also be played at the Colombo road courts tomorrow, Celtic 1 v Kuranui College and Gladstone All Blacks v Harcourts 2.
For Kuranui College it's a second major assignment in as many weekends as just last Saturday they took on the unbeaten defending champions Harcourts 1 and ended up a distant second. From all accounts they didn't display their usual hunger and tenacity in that game and they will need all of that to trouble a Celtic side which is sitting second on the competition table.
Up until last weekend Gladstone All Blacks would have been hot favourites to overwhelm Harcourts 2 but the latter surprisingly beat Wairarapa College then and with All Blacks tending to run hot one game and cold the next the chances of another upset can't be ignored. One suspects though that All Blacks will see this game as their chance to cement a top six berth and their performance will consequently lift as a result.
The two premier one games drawn for the Genesis Recreation Centre tonight look foregone conclusions with St Matthews Collegiate having too many guns for Carterton Red and Harcourts 1 likewise for Wairarapa College.
Present competition points are: Harcourts No.1 24, Celtic 21, St Matthews Collegiate 17, Kuranui College 16, Sports Arena Carterton 16, Gladstone All Blacks 12, Salute Greytown 8, Wairarapa College 5, Harcourts No.2 4 and Carterton Red 1.
