The Pahiatua Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to put out a suspicious blaze that erupted in an empty building at a saleyard site in the town early Sunday morning.
A suspicious fire was started at the old Pahiatua saleyards on Princess St early Sunday.
The Pahiatua Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to put out a blaze in an empty building on the yard site at 2.44am.
Officer in charge Bryce O'Donnell said the building was made of thick material, which prevented the fire from taking hold.
It had been burning for a while but there wasn't much damage except to the doorframe.
"It was only a very small fire, nothing too major," Mr O'Donnell said.
Crew put the fire out quickly and a second truck was not needed.
Chief fire officer Peter Daymond said the blaze was suspicious and police were asked to attend.
The building and saleyards are in the process of being dismantled by the Bush Multisport Trust.
The trust plans to develop the land for sports use.
