Canterbury marine radio operator Barry Groom, the comforting voice on the radio to many a sailor in distress, has died. He was 76.
Mr Groom and his wife, Lyn, have run the voluntary Waikuku Marine Radio service from their home for the past 34 years, helping in more than 300 mayday incidents.
