Sailor rescued after boat sinks near Waiheke Island

A Coromandel man was rescued minutes before his boat sank near Waiheke Island yesterday.

The man made a mayday call at 4.45pm after his 8.5m yacht began taking on water near Thumb Pt, on the north-east tip of the island.

A coastguard vessel hauled the man off.
