Extra side barriers and median strip modifications are planned for SH2 between Carterton and Masterton as part of a $2.7 million project starting in July.
The safety improvements, which will be funded by NZTA, were unanimously approved at this week's Greater Wellington Regional Council's regional transport committee.
A spokesperson for NZTA could not give a breakdown of the project costs but said the $2.7 million estimate was based on previous works done in the area
"The specifics of the interventions will be determined in the first stage of the project, which is expected to start in July," she said. "The type of interventions that you could expect to be part of the project include side barriers and median treatments to help address road run-off and head-on crashes."
In the 10-year period between 2005-2014 there were 14 fatal and serious-injury crashes - two were head-on, five were loss of control, three were at intersections, and four were other types of crashes.
