Urgent safety inspections have been ordered for 2250 pre-1980 Ford trucks, buses and motor homes.
Land Transport NZ took the action after a broken steering component caused a school bus crash in Southland this month.
The agency says people with R and D series heavy Ford vehicles made before 1980 should stop using them immediately until they have been inspected.
"The fact that these potentially defective components may be fitted to a large number of heavy vehicles on New Zealand roads, including buses, makes us extremely concerned," said Director of Land Transport Wayne Donnelly.
