Parts of a Wellington wharf have been closed to the public due to safety concerns.
The Hutt City Council has closed the northern and southern tees of the Point Howard wharf, after a routine survey identified timber and steel fixings deteriorating faster than expected.
Council's reserves asset manager Craig Cottrill said although the risk of a structural failure is low, the consequences could be high and they are taking a safety-first approach.
He says severe weather, or a drifting log, container or boat, could result in weakened piles being snapped or dislodged.
The council is currently looking at various options for the wharf.
