KEY POINTS:
The Auckland Regional Council is about to start a blitz against dangerous driving on Muriwai Beach and the coast north.
The council's campaign will use enforcement officers, new signs and an inter-agency incident database, and will start at Labour Weekend.
Radio and newspaper advertising will promote responsible use of vehicles on the coast.
The council's group manager of visitor service, Jane Aickin, said the goal was to improve the behaviour of drivers on beaches.
Police had done most of the work on monitoring driving on the beaches last summer, and the regional council would now be more involved.
The council was concerned about motorists driving on the sand dunes and about general "hooning around" in vehicles.
Ms Aickin said signs would be put up at access points.
They would warn drivers about keeping off dunes, keeping headlights on at all times and slowing down for children.
The Rodney District Council was introducing a bylaw that would reduce speeds to between 30km/h and 60km/h on stretches of the Muriwai Te Oneone Rangatira coastline.
Cars would not be allowed south of Coast Rd, at the Okiritoto Stream, or along the Papakanui Spit to the north.
