Sacred Heart College is considering opening its doors to girls - but any move to become co-educational would be several years away.
Principal Brendan Schollum said a feasibility study was being commissioned in conjunction with the Catholic diocese to determine the level of demand for a co-ed school.
The move follows queries from parents.
Mr Schollum said those involved with the 97-year-old Glen Innes college were at the very early stages of considering the issue.
There were compelling arguments both for keeping Sacred Heart single-sex and for making it co-educational.
"True, there are strong reasons for putting a girls' college on site and sharing facilities, but there are equally good reasons for staying as a single-sex school," he said. "It will be a long consultation process."
After results of the feasibility study were known, it would still be necessary to consult parents, college old boys and members of the community.
