STOCKHOLM - Saab is to challenge its European rivals in New Zealand with four examples of its new 9-3 sports sedan.
The car, a blend of understated styling and exciting performance, will go on sale in New Zealand around November.
The four models - called the Linear, Arc, Vector and Aero - will be priced between $58,000 and $83,000.
The Arc and Vector will arrive first, followed in December by the entry-level Linear and, next year, by the top-line Aero.
We have not had a product to compete with the BMW 3-Series - now we do, said Saab Australia and New Zealand chief Tony Jennett at the unveiling in Sweden.
Launching a sports sedan such as the 9-3 is the fastest way of finding new customers.
Jennett, who plans to strengthen Saab's dealer network in New Zealand, will aim the new model at European rivals BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Alfa Romeo and Jaguar.
The 9-3 is a genuine alternative, he said. "Saab has got this car spot-on."
Indeed it has. A 400km drive on a mix of roads north of Sweden's capital revealed a car that handles and rides better than anything Saab has done.
Three 2-litre turbocharged engines are available, producing 110kW, 129kW and 155kw and mated to either six-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearboxes.
"This is a new era for Saab," said Jennett. "The 9-3 is going to be a strong competitor in the largest and fastest-growing segment of the new-car market."
Weekend Drive will feature the new Saab this Saturday.
