Wairarapa-Bush head coach Mark Rutene wants greater resolve from his players in their Heartland championship rugby match with Mid-Canterbury at Methven tomorrow.
Rutene was hugely disappointed with the lack of aggression shown during the 53-26 loss to Thames Valley last weekend and says they will need to up the ante to be competitive.
"It's all about character. We all know what happened against the Valley and what has to be done to improve things," he said. "A lot of it comes down to resolve. We have to be competitive right from the word go."
Rutene also wants better communication, particularly in the backs where many tackles were missed through poor alignment.
"There has to be more chat, players need to keep talking about what is happening around them."
Remarkably, the backline will not have one player starting in the same position as last weekend and just three - Trent Vatselias, Jesse McGilvary and Nick Olson - were part of the run-on side.
With the non-availability of Zeb Aporo and the relegation of Tipene Haira to the reserves, Vatselias moves from fullback to first-five, McGilvary from centre to wing and Olson from wing to fullback.
Combining in the midfield will be Tommy Harmon and Heemi Tupaea, who both came off the bench against Valley, while Matt O'Connor will start at halfback and Michael Vuicikau on the wing. Vuicikau is over an injury worry.
Three changes in the starting line-up have been made up front. Wilbur Davies comes in at prop, Brandan Young at lock and James Goodger at flanker after doing well in the second half against Valley.
Wairarapa-Bush: Nick Olson; Jesse McGilvary, Heemi Tupaea, Tommy Harmon, Michael Vuicikau; Trent Vatselias; Matt O'Connor; Joss Tua-Davidson; James Goodger, Brandon Young, Dan Griffin, Johan van Vliet; Wilbur Davies, Campbell Lawrence, Kurt Simmonds. Reserves: Inia Katia, Tipene Haira, Sam Mitchell, Brendan Walker, Andrew McLean, Rupeni Tamani, Tereina McLean.
