A woman turned to a social media group halfway across the world after her daughter struck trouble walking the Te Araroa trail in Northland.
The concerned Russian mother, who spoke little English, contacted a Te Araroa Facebook page after her trekking daughter set off her emergency satellite messenger alarm.
"Hi all! My daughter Valery Mikhailova, now on the trail, 2 hours ago, she gave share.findmespo help signal, I don't know what's wrong with her, who's next please help," posted a distressed Luiza Kim.
She added her daughter's last known satellite co-ordinates telling those online her daughter had been in Ahipara the day before.
The community jumped into action, contacting police after the mother revealed language barriers meant she did not know how to alert New Zealand authorities.
