KEY POINTS:
A fading headwind proved a runners' delight in the race along the waterfront to finish yesterday's Auckland Marathon.
Smiles of achievement greatly out numbered exhausted grimaces among the record 12,200 entrants and celebrations lingered into the night at Victoria Park.
Organisers said an abrupt change overnight from cold, wet and gusty weather ensured ideal conditions for a happy event.
The marathon and half marathon events were sold out two months before the event. These are limited to a total of 7500 runners because of safety and logistical concerns with use of the Harbour Bridge and some North Shore roads.
More than $75,000 was donated to the marathon's official charity, the National Heart Foundation.
Next year's marathon will carry a $20,000 jackpot prize for the fastest man and woman and it will also be the national marathon and half marathon championships.
