A "masterpiece" with views over Auckland's Hauraki Gulf was named Registered Master Builders 2009 House of the Year at a black-tie gala dinner in at SkyCity, Auckland, last night.
Judges waxed lyrical about the three-storey Glendowie home, built by PSL Construction, which features panoramic views across Karaka Bay to Browns Island and around to Musick Point.
"This was an exceptionally designed and crafted home," said one. "The degree and detailing required of the builders was a real test of their skills and one that was delivered to the letter with a magnificently crafted interior and exterior."
The house's features include large panels that automatically open and close by sensor to control temperature, an outdoor room with a fireplace and an infinity pool. A central atrium can be used as an entrance or lounge extension to cater for large gatherings. The house, which won the New Homes over $1 million category as well as the supreme residential award, uses wood panelling in a variety of colours and basalt-clad pillars to create a warm, homely feel.
Other winners included a new public swimming pool and leisure centre in Queenstown. Alpine Aqualand, owned by Queenstown Lakes District Council, won the supreme award in the commercial projects category.
