An "unprecedented" number of New Zealanders watched the opening Rugby World Cup match between the All Blacks and Tonga, new figures reveal.
A special Nielsen survey showed 81 per cent of New Zealanders aged 15 and over tuned into the Friday night game, which was won by the All Blacks 41-10.
Of those, 12 per cent watched at a friends home, five per cent at a pub or club and six per cent at an outdoor venue. The remaining 58 per cent watched at home.
The viewing figures were unprecendented and showed the level of support New Zealanders were showing to the Rugby World Cup, Neilson said.
