South African Super 15 rugby team the Lions says none of its players are being investigated over an alleged sexual assault in Dunedin at the weekend.
However, Australian team the Western Force, which was staying at the same hotel, has declined to comment on the allegation, the Otago Daily Times reported.
Police said an 18-year-old female student had complained she was sexually assaulted in the city early on Sunday morning.
"We are unaware of any of our team being involved," Lions president Kevin de Klerk said last night.
"We will avail ourselves totally and co-operatively in helping to resolve this matter."
A police spokeswoman said it was inappropriate to release further details so early in the inquiry.
