Wairarapa-Bush ran in four tries in beating Horowhenua-Kapiti in their opening match at the Hurricanes secondary schoolgirls rugby tournament yesterday.
Coach Sharon Haeata was delighted with the way forwards and backs combined with flanker Sam Stewart, first-five Jess Bennett and centre Shakira Baker all having standout performances. Baker scored three tries and Lisa-Marie Ireland one while Ireland also kicked three conversions and a penalty goal.
On the hockey front the Wairarapa primary schoolgirls team continued on their winning way at the Collier trophy tournament in Dunedin, beating Nelson 3-0. Goal scorers were K.Saba, H.Patmore and M.Henson.
Wairarapa had the mortification of conceding three goals in the last 10 minutes in losing 3-2 to Bay of Plenty at the Hatch Cup primary schoolboys hockey tournament in Tauranga. Goals to Fraser Dymond and Mitchell Blackwood had Wairarapa 2-0 up early in the second half but they were sunk by the late Bay of Plenty rally.
