Who said soccer and rugby clubs can't work together?
Making a nonsense of that claim are the Wairarapa United men's soccer team and the Carterton Rugby Club.
Inadequate lighting at their Howard Booth headquarters in Carterton was hampering Wairarapa United in their lead-up to matches in the Capital division one competition and their rugby counterparts have come to their assistance.
They offered Wairarapa United the chance to train under their lights and that is now happening on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley can't speak highly enough of the support given them by the rugby club.
"We are actually training on the same nights and they are working around us, rather than the other way around," he said. "It's been a huge help for us???.we can actually do everything we want at training now.""
Keinzley knows his team will need to be right at their best to beat Wellington United in their division one match at Newtown Park in Wellington tomorrow.
Wairarapa United currently sits second on the competition table with Wellington United third, just three points (or one win) behind them.
And with the top two sides at the end of the season having the chance to earn promotion to the premier division next season the result of tomorrow's encounter could play a huge part in who makes it, and who doesn't.
Keinzley believes little can be read into the fact Wairarapa United won the first round clash between the two sides as Wellington United have gained a number of talented recruits since then and will consequently be a much tougher proposition on this occasion.
And he is also concerned that the weather forecoast for Wellington tomorrow is for a southerly change, bringing wind and rain, and very probably making for soft ground conditions.
"The odds are that conditions will be very like they were on Queen's Birthday weekend and we lost two matches then," he said. "We're much better suited to playing on top of the ground but soccer is a winter sport and we have to come to grips with heavier surfaces too."
Keinzley considers the tightness of his team's defence will have a big say in he outcome of tomorrow's game.
It was the one of Wairarapa United's main attributes earlier in the season but some soft goals have been "leaked" lately and Wellington United will have the firepower in their attack to take full advantage of any weaknesses there.
According to Keinzley, however , the problem can be easily fixed as it has mainly revolved around players not communicating well enough with each other.
"There has to be more talk?..we have dropped off in that respect and suffered because of it,' he said.
Keinzley is confident that if the defence is tightened Wairarapa United have enough goal scoring potential to produce a win, and a good win at that.
"We have scored more goals than any other team in the league so there's no need to worry about that side of the game," he said.
"If we can keep a clean sheet at the other end of the field we should get the result we want.".
