KEY POINTS:
Rubbish police are about to hit the streets of Auckland to stop people mixing rubbish with their recycling.
Auckland is due to roll out the country's largest recycling scheme on Monday after the delivery of more than 150,000 240-litre wheelie bins to residents.
Auckland City Council said the bins were for paper, plastic, glass, steel and aluminium - but not rubbish.
When the new fortnightly collection service began on Monday, rubbish "detectives" would go ahead of the trucks to check what was in the bins, the council said today.
Any bin containing a large amount of non-recyclable rubbish would be sealed and a note would be left with the householder saying it would not be emptied until it contained only recyclable material.
The wheelie bins would replace recycling crates and would take a variety of recyclable material.
The council said the new bins were expected to increase the volume of recycling by up to 25 per cent.
