A women's magazine is publicly hinting it has scored a "blockbuster" story about Prince Charles and a previously unknown love-child.
Woman's Day claims to have an exclusive interview with a woman called Janet Jenkins concerning "her relationship with Prince Charles and the paternity of her 16-year-old child, Jason."
The magazine, published by Australian Consolidated Press, has used the sure-to-attract attention device of sending a lawyer's letter to news outlets warning them off the story.
It claims use of the yet-to-materialise interview, or accompanying exclusive photographs and letters, would be a breach of copyright.
It is unclear whether Janet Jenkins lives in Australia or New Zealand and where the alleged paternity issues originated. Prince Charles was still married to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, 16 years ago.
The editor of Woman's Day in New Zealand, Michele Crawshaw, would not comment on the story, except to say that Monday's edition would be a blockbuster. She would not say how much the magazine had paid for the story.
No one was available for official comment at Buckingham Palace last night, but the man who answered the telephone said: "It sounds like a load of bunk."
