KEY POINTS:
The Routeburn track northwest of Queenstown has been closed after a swingbridge was destroyed by a falling tree.
The tree fell at the Glenorchy end of the track on Friday and the Department of Conservation said it planned to build a new one before the start of the Great Walks season in October.
The track starts near the northern end of Lake Whakatipu and links up to State Highway 94, which heads to the Milford Sound.
The new bridge was likely to cost up to $100,000.
