An 18-year-old Rotorua man has appeared in the Whakatane District Court charged with sexual violation by rape following an incident in Ohope during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Teina Ariki Rongonui appeared in court yesterday and did not enter a plea and was bailed under strict conditions to re-appear on February 12.
Whakatane police Sergeant Yvonne Parker said police were alerted to the incident after a person at the home called.
"With assistance from people at the house we arrested an 18-year-old and later charged him with rape," Mrs Parker said.
Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident. The alleged victim is being cared for by family and friends with help from Victim Support.
