A fire at Rotorua Lakes High School overnight was arson, say Rotorua police.
As a result, the school was closed today.
Police and the Fire Service were called to the school at 10.05pm yesterday, and found the entrance to the science block well alight. The block was being refurbished.
Detective Sergeant John Wilson, of Rotorua CIB, said there was extensive damage to the ceiling immediately above the entrance, and considerable smoke damage to the two rooms being refurbished.
"Quick action by a caretaker and the Rotorua fire Service prevented the remainder of the building being damaged," he said.
Mr Wilson said police were seeking public assistance in identifying the people responsible for the fire.
