KEY POINTS:
Rotorua has put its hand up to be involved in the return of iconic television show Top Town and the city's mayor is now looking for team-mates.
The show, which ran from 1976 to 1990, is set to return to our television screens in December.
Rotorua District Council communications manager Rex Moore said mayor Kevin Winters had been approached by the show's producers to see if Rotorua would take part.
Mr Moore said several people in the community had already expressed an interest in being part of the mixed 12-person team for the show and council officers would meet next week to discuss the idea.
Mr Winters said the idea sounded like a lot of fun.
"After hearing back from organisers we will look at what we need to fundraise and how we will get a team together."
He said those in the team would need to spend eight days in Christchurch in early December for filming.
The show's producer, Eyeworks, is looking for 15 towns to compete for community pride.
To be eligible, a town must have a publicly elected mayor.
The last series in the once popular competition screened in 1990 when Greymouth won the title.
Eyeworks head of television Greg Heathcote said spectacular new games were set to excite a new generation of viewers.
"But in keeping with the tradition of the original show, the competition will be for the pride and mana of the town, the coveted Top Town trophy and the right to be called New Zealand's Top Town."
Mayors across the country were contacted to help co-ordinate teams. The final 15 sides selected will each have 12 competitors, along with their own cheer squads, supporters and mascots.
Greymouth has already confirmed it wants to defend its title. Organisers say the event will feature many of the races and competitions from previous series of the show but would be "less egg and spoon" and more mud and water.
