The explosion of 'P' - pure methamphetamine - into the Rotorua drug market has prompted police to appoint a detective to target manufacturers and users.
Detective Sergeant Chris McLeod has taken on the new role of cracking down on those supplying 'P', which has been attributed to a number of serious and violent crimes in Rotorua.
Mr McLeod said he was concerned many 'P' dealers were getting off with a lighter sentence because the law required them to be caught with huge amounts of the drug.
Its use had already spread through all ranks of society, including working professionals, and was increasing quickly.
