The family of a roofer who died after being electrocuted while working in Christchurch wants answers as to how it happened.
Mathew John Down, 55, was fixing a leaky roof on a Clarkson Ave site, between Cashel and Lichfield Streets in the central city, when he died on Thursday, The Press reported.
His son Gary, who was working with him at the time, said they were assessing the roof when his father leant against the polystyrene panel wall of an adjoining property.
His father got electrocuted as soon as he touched the panel, he said.
By the time the ambulance arrived Mr Down was dead.
His son said he wanted an investigation, as his father was always safety conscious.
Power company Orion, the Department of Labour, and police were investigating.
Lines company Orion would not comment except to say it was called to the scene to cut off the power after the incident.
The Department of Labour told NZPA it could not comment as an investigation was under way.
Building Trades Union national secretary David O'Connell said he was surprised to hear of the death as he was under the impression power had been disconnected in the "red zone".
He said union members have been told if they think a building is unsafe, they should not go near it.
