KEY POINTS:
The man who died during a fire in Marton yesterday may have been struck by a collapsing roof, emergency services say.
A resident of Milne St who heard a loud explosion called emergency services just before 1am and firefighters arrived to find a shed in flames.
Marton Chief Fire Officer Paul Hudson said they found the body of a 37-year-old man after putting the fire out.
"There were sheets of iron up there and it all came down on top of him, so he was pretty well covered."
The fire appeared to have started by the workbench, he said.
Police had identified the man and he would be publicly named today.
"Whether something fell and knocked him over, whether he bumped his head or something fell on top of him, I don't know," said Mr Hudson.
The man probably died from smoke inhalation.
The fire gutted the shed, which is still standing although part of the roof caved in.
The shed was on a back section down a long driveway and was set up like a workshop with a saw bench, tools and stacked timber about 3m from a house.
The residence, in which a family were sleeping, was not damaged.
