KEY POINTS:
Sir Murray Halberg's appointment to the Order of New Zealand today heads a rollcall of 78 women and 100 men on the Queen's Birthday Honours list and a further 11 Defence Force awards.
No appointments are made to the rank of Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit - one tier below the ONZ - but four men and a woman become Distinguished Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit (DCNZM).

Waitangi Tribunal founding director Wira Gardiner is made a DCNZM for services to Maori, and retired High Court judge John Hansen of Rangiora for services to the judiciary.
Aucklander Peter Maire is also made a DCNZM, for services to business - his company built the Navman GPS tracking system - as is retired Auckland University professor Harold Marshall, for services to acoustical science.
Dunedin composer Gillian Whitehead becomes a DCNZM for services to music, a promotion from Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM), which she was made in 1999.
Maori leader Anaru Rangiheuea of Rotorua is the other person promoted in the honours - from Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1999 to companion of the order, for services to Maori and the community.
Whitehead's is one of 10 Queen's Birthday honours awarded to musicians - including three to jazz musicians - three for services to the arts, one for services to literature, and one for services to poetry.
Internationally acclaimed poet Fleur Adcock, who lives in England, is appointed a Companion of the NZ Order of Merit after being made an OBE in 1996.
Other CNZMs include footballer Wynton Rufer, for services to soccer, and Zambesi fashion label founders Liz and Neville Findlay, for services to fashion and business.
Derek Lardelli, best known for writing the All Blacks' new haka Kapa o Pango but also a fine ta moko artist, performer, composer, graphic designer and historian, is made a CNZM, as is Metro magazine founding editor Warwick Roger.
New members of the NZ Order of Merit include Bastion Pt protester and former Labour MP Joe Hawke, Icebreaker merino outdoor clothing founder Jeremy Moon, guitar ace Peter Posa, former Evening Post editor Sue Carty and former All Black and rugby league star Inga Tuigamala.
